XL1 Club Newsletter – August 2024

Dear XL1 Club Member

President’s Message

What a big month August turned out to be. I would firstly like to congratulate Caitlin Parker for winning a bronze medal in her boxing weight category at the Paris Olympics that added to the achievements of all athletes at Australia’s most successful Olympic Games ever. Those who attended our March Lunch will remember Caitlin was our Guest Speaker and gave us an insight into her journey with the trials and tribulations involved in women’s boxing. Not only is Caitlin a magnificent sportsperson but she is also a down to earth lovely lady.

Following on with the sporting theme our August Lunch was the John Forbes OAM KGSJ Memorial lunch. We had 115 attending including a number of special guests. Everyone enjoyed the day with a lot of stories told about John’s life.

Faye Forbes attended with Peter and Zac. Our club member and Emergency Services Commissioner, Rick Nugent also managed to join us for lunch. On behalf of your committee, I would like to thank Ray Thompson with the assistance of Gareth Hanlon for organising the day.

In keeping with John’s dedication to Sport and Sporting Personalities, our special sporting guests included Ray Borner four times Olympic Basketballer and Brian McNicoll five times Para Olympian Weightlifter.

Football Legends Peter Hudson and Peter Knights, remembered their association with John and sporting and media personalities Ian Cover, Glenn Ridge, John Craven and John Deeks added their praise.

The roving Mike segment by the two Ian’s, Couttsey and Coves was as professional and memorable as one would find at any Major Event.

With the assistance of our own in-house sporting greats, Peter Bedford and Des Dickson, we were able to identify two very talented and promising junior up and coming sporting talents. Footballer 13-year-old Jacob Gatt from Port Melbourne and 13-year-old gymnast from Bendigo, Amelia Mitrovic. We awarded each with a Special John Forbes Plaque along with a small financial incentive totally $1k to help in
achieving their Sporting Goals.

We were also able to identify a small struggling regional sporting club the Mitiamo Netball Club where we donated $2k towards their cost for the year for uniforms and equipment. The fact that this Club comes from John’s hometown added something Special to the Day.

In addition, we inducted three new Members into the Club. Each presented well and will be an asset to the XLI Club.

I am also pleased to see this month we launched the new XL1 Club website where members will be able to find historical information about the Club as well as information on upcoming events. Through the website you may also book and pay for our monthly luncheons. The website address is “the41club.com”. If you haven’t already, I encourage all to take a look at the site.

Onto the September lunch when we are again expecting a big day. This lunch will be our annual XLI Club Victoria Police Community Awards and Police Memorial lunch. We will be making presentations to Victoria Police members who have been selected for their work within their communities. We will also remember the Police who have lost their lives in the Line of Duty over the preceding twelve months. We have several guests joining us and our Patron, Chief Commissioner Shane Patton, who is committed to a previous engagement, will be represented by Acting Deputy Commissioner Libby Murphy. We look forward to another wonderful lunch so please if you have not yet done so, book with Barbara.
