President’s Message June 2026

Dear XLI Club member,

Well, here we are halfway through the year and all the EOFY sales reminding us that it is also the end of the financial year – how did we get here already?? Whilst I hate to bring it up so early in my message it is a timely reminder that the new financial year means that the Club 2026-27 subscription fees are now due.

Onto more pleasurable matters I am pleased to share that 60 members and guests came together for our June lunch which was held back at the Angliss restaurant. This lunch was our Police Legacy lunch. The timing of the lunch coincided nicely with National Police Legacy Day which was celebrated on 17 June. Our lunch, one day later on 18 June, was an opportunity for us to shine a light on Police Legacy Victoria.

We were pleased to have as our special guest speaker, Detective Inspector Kate O’Neill, Board Chair, Police Legacy Victoria. Kate was accompanied by her father Pete O’Neill, Retired Superintendent. Kate gave us an interesting and entertaining presentation about her journey to her current role as Board Chair, as well about some of the fantastic work that Police Legacy do and the support they provide their legatees. With the support of Bank Vic, we were pleased to provide Police Legacy with a donation of $4,500.

At this lunch I was also delighted to have the rare opportunity to induct a mother and son into the Club. We welcomed new members Joan Pianta and her son Michael Pianta. Joan and Michael join Gwen Crimmins and Sam Crimmins as the only mother and son members of the club.

It was an excellent lunch enjoyed by all in attendance and I’d like to thank Gareth Hanlon who did a great job as MC for the day, standing in for Ian Coutts, who was away overseas.

You may recall that at our May lunch we heard from Dr Judy Campbell about her fundraising efforts to purchase a blood centrifuge for the Muntok Red Cross on Bangka Island to support its vital blood processing work. I am pleased to say that thanks to book sales and special hamper raffles, our initial donation of $2,000 has grown to $4,205. There will be further opportunities to contribute through book sales and another special hamper raffle later in the year.

Our next lunch is on 16 July. This is our Tony Charlton Community Service Award luncheon where we will be announcing the name of the recipient of the 2026 award. As in previous years we hope to be joined by Tony Charlton’s widow, Mrs Loris Charlton, as well as some past recipients of the award. I know we will be in the depths of winter, but I hope you can brave the winter chills to join us to hear of and celebrate with the 2026 award recipient.

Finally, I am pleased to say that thanks to some great work by Dennis Williams, the XLI Website has been refreshed and is up to date with information about the Club, our newsletters and upcoming lunches. Please be sure to check out the site at: www.the41club.com. Our thanks go to Dennis for this work and for agreeing to maintain the website going forward.

I look forward to seeing many of you for lunch on 16 July. Until then, stay well.
